What is a bike bus?

A school bus, minus the bus

A bike bus is a group of kids riding to school together on a set route, at set times, with adults leading the way. Kids join in as the group rolls past, exactly like a bus picking up passengers, except everyone is pedaling and grinning.

Rivers Riders was started by a group of E. Rivers dads who figured the ride to school could be the best part of the day. We ride every Friday morning during the school year, and the school has made Rivers Riders an official pickup option.

Kids from Loring Heights, Brookwood Hills, Collier Hills, Peachtree Hills, Haynes Manor, Peachtree Heights, Berkeley Park, and Underwood Hills all ride. More bikes. More friends. More fun.

Friday mornings, every week during the school year. Be at your stop a few minutes early. The bus waits for no one, but it does ring its bell a lot.

Safety & expectations

House rules of the road

Nothing complicated. A few rules keep the whole pack rolling safe and happy.

  • Helmets. Always.No helmet, no ride. No exceptions, even for grown-ups.

  • Bring a bike lockBikes park at school all day. Lock them up.

  • Tell the schoolOn ride days, notify the school that your child is riding home with an adult.

  • Leaders leadRiders stay behind the ride leaders. Nobody rides ahead.

  • Ride smartFollow traffic rules and listen to the ride leaders.

  • Big kids watch little kidsThat is the whole culture in five words.

  • Ready ridersKids should start, stop, and ride steadily on their own. Still learning? Totally welcome in a bike seat, trailer, or tag-along with an adult.

  • All wheels welcomeScooters and other wheels can join if they keep pace. Parents and caregivers decide when their kid is ready to ride in a group.

Rivers Riders is an informal, parent-led group, not a school-sponsored or Atlanta Public Schools program. Riding is at your own risk, and every parent or caregiver is responsible for their own child. We look out for each other, but you know your kid best.

The bus runs on parents

Every ride needs at least two adults in the morning and two in the afternoon. That is the whole staffing model. If a handful of parents each take one Friday a month, the bus never misses a run.

  • Ride along whenever you can, no schedule needed
  • Cheer from anywhere on the route
  • Help at an intersection for ten minutes
  • Bring bubbles or a speaker. Instant parade.
